This year we present free events, ticketed events, and passes, which make access even simpler.

All 2021 Festival events will take place via Zoom. For your security, all events (even the free ones) require registration — which will include reminders and the event links sent to you. A ticket purchase means you’re registered.

Please note that all ticket purchasers or registrants for a particular program will get exclusive access to watch the event’s recording for 10 days after airtime. So if you can’t make the live experience, no worries: if you sign up, you can still see the conversation.

Tickets and Passes

General/Adult Events

Individual events

The Schedule page lists all events. Under each event description is a link for registration (for free events) or ticket purchase. Most ticketed events are $15 for basic admission, with the option to add book purchases. Another ticketing option is our Eventbrite page, where you can select from all events except for Kazuo Ishiguro/Yaa Gyasi, which you may purchase here.

Passes for multiple events

If you’re interested in attending multiple ticketed events, we recommend purchasing a pass so you only have to register once to automatically receive all links for the programs covered by your pass. A pass also saves you money and helps the nonprofit festival. Check out the options below, then go here to purchase:

  • Festival Pass: $60 ($90 value)
    • Includes admission to all ticketed programs (6 total) except Kazuo Ishiguro event (May 2) and the Saturday night closing weekend event, “There’s a Revolution Outside, My Love” (May 8)
  • Festival Pass PLUS: $85 ($120 value)
    • Includes admission to all programs in the basic Festival Pass (6 total) plus admission to “There’s a Revolution Outside, My Love” (May 8), which includes the book
  • Ultimate Pass: $120 ($140 value)
    • Admission to all ticketed events, including Ishiguro/Gyasi and “There’s a Revolution Outside, My Love” (with book)

Youth Pass and Individual Programs: All Free!

All youth events are free but require registration, which will include the links sent to you before each program. You can register for each program individually on the Youth Schedule page, or take advantage of the Youth Pass, which is free but registers you for all youth events, which means you’ll automatically receive all the links. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I share my ticket/viewing link with others?

We appreciate it if you don’t share your viewing link outside of your own household. If the Festival’s events were in a theater (and we hope that soon we’ll return!), each person would have their own ticket. Ticket revenue is essential for event producers to create events in the first place, and we’re no exception, even in the virtual space.

That said, if you’re watching on a single ticket with a partner, friend, child, or other close companion together on a comfy sofa, so be it, and enjoy the much-needed closeness after our “lockdown year!” But where you can, please do buy individual tickets. Most of all, please don’t share your viewing link with others via email.

Do you offer refunds?

We can offer refunds of the admission portion of a ticket up to 7 days before the event itself. Unfortunately we can’t offer refunds of book purchases, which in most cases will have already been sent to the bookseller for fulfillment.

I missed my program. Can I still watch it?

Yes! After each event we’ll send out an email containing a private Youtube link to all ticket holders or registrants. The video will be available to view for the 10 days after the event has aired. Remember, this replay option is only available for those who have registered for or purchased tickets by the time the program begins.

How do I attend / view my event?

All events will be presented in Zoom. Once you’ve signed up to view an event, you’ll receive an email from [email protected] approximately 24 hours prior to showtime with a watch link. If the email hasn’t appeared in your inbox by noon, make sure to check your spam/promotions folder, and if it’s still not there, you can  contact us at [email protected]

Can I ask the speakers a question?

When you sign up for a program you’ll have the chance to submit questions to the speakers in advance. We’ll send these questions to the event moderator in advance. Additionally, for most events you’ll be able to submit questions live during the talk via the Audience Q&A function (located at the bottom of the Zoom window).

For all general programs, our Live Audience Chat will be open, so you can connect with fellow viewers and crowdsource answers to your questions. Live Audience Chat will not be open for youth programs.

How do I chat? How do I hide the chat section?

Please note that Bay Area Book Festival staff will monitor the chat, and will remove any remarks that they deem inappropriate.

How do I watch the video in full screen mode?

Click the full screen icon in the upper righthand corner of the Zoom window. To exit full screen mode, click the icon again or hit the Escape key.

We’re here for you! Live support will be available at [email protected] on each day of the Festival, May 1 through 9, beginning one hour prior to each event’s start time. And we monitor the [email protected] inbox every weekday until the Festival’s end.

Ticketing issues

All of our ticketing and registrations take place on eventbrite.

Make a tax-deductible donation of $100 and get invited to a virtual afterparty with the author(s) of your choice, 10 minutes after the event! You’ll get a Zoom afterparty link mailed to you the day of your chosen event.

Purchasing the Authors’ Books

Please do buy their books! You can add books when you purchase your pass or reserve your space at both free and ticketed events. We strongly encourage you to buy the authors’ books through our partner bookseller, Green Apple Books, via our checkout page. (See this brief video where Ann Patchett tells you why!).

We send our book orders very frequently to Green Apple Books. If the book you’ve purchased has already been published, the book will be shipped to you right away. If the book is published later than your purchase date, we’ll send it the moment it’s available. A couple of books won’t be available until after the event date, but this will be noted in checkout. If you have questions about your book orders 24 hours after you’ve placed them, please email [email protected].

What You’ll Receive After Registration/Purchase

Immediately after you’ve signed up to attend an event or made a purchase, you’ll receive a confirmation email from [email protected]. If the email hasn’t appeared within an hour, please check your spam/promotions folder. If the email is there, we strongly encourage you to add “[email protected]” to your contacts list so you won’t miss any links or instructions closer to the event. If the confirmation email isn’t found in any of your inboxes, please contact [email protected] so we can troubleshoot to ensure that you’ll receive your link when it’s event time.

Approximately 24 hours before the event’s scheduled time, we’ll send you a watch link and passcode. If the email hasn’t appeared in your inbox by noon, again please check your spam/promotions folder. If it’s still not there, you can contact us at [email protected].
