Young readers hold the key to the future. They’re the writers, thinkers, and leaders of tomorrow. We believe in nurturing our community’s young people to become lifelong readers and book-lovers, and that’s why our entire festival is free for everyone 18 and under!

YOUNG ADULT PROGRAMMING

We’re living in a golden era for YA lit. For so many young people, YA opens the gates to a lifelong love affair with reading—and let’s not forget the legions of grown-ups who are transported by this dynamic, ever-evolving genre! We offer exciting, diverse programming for young adult readers, from compelling fantasy and dystopia to issue-oriented realistic fiction and inspiring true-life stories.

And, because 2020’s election is the most consequential of our—and our kids’—lifetimes, voting rights will be a big part of this year’s programming! Come listen to top authors interviewed by the amazing local teens of Cinnamongirl, Inc. Be awed by the young winners of our writing contests as they read their original work to an audience for the first time. See the future unfold—it’s brighter than you think.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMMING

We bring some of the biggest names in children’s lit to our free outdoor stages and lawns for unforgettable encounters with the Bay Area’s young people. This year, teens from local schools will once again be interviewing their favorite middle-grade authors on our free outdoor Young Readers Stage. We’re also excited to once again host a live taping of the Book Club for Kids podcast, featuring middle-schoolers interviewing one of their much loved middle-grade authors.

The little ones will be delighted by interactive sessions with beloved picture-book authors and illustrators on the Young Readers Stage. They’ll gather round for our famous StoryTime Circle to hear authors and illustrators read their books aloud in an intimate setting. All this goodness plays out in the midst of our free, joyful Outdoor Fair, a feast for kids’ souls, eyes, and ears, full of live performances, special programs, and creative stations.
