Mark Ciabattari, Katie Hafner, Peter Hoey

Mark Ciabattari’s most recent collection recounting the absurdist adventures of an everyman is entitled When the Mask Slips. The mask, in this case, is reality—and all the creators in this session depict a world that is just slightly off-kilter. Ciabattari’s several “cartoonish and clever” books featuring his protagonist Rizzoli have drawn comparisons to Calvino and Kafka. Peter Hoey’s The Bend of Luck (co-created with his sister Maria) is literally cartoonish—their latest graphic novel depicts an historic version of California in which prospectors pan for luck, not gold. And debut novelist Katie Hafner, in The Boys, cleverly manages a game-changing plot twist, prompting readers to view her characters and their world in a heartbreakingly different light. Join these three inventive creators for an intellectually playful conversation, moderated by Heather Partington.
