Eboni K. Williams: Bet on Black

Sunday, May 7 | 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

SF Chronicle Stage in the Park

  • Outdoor

Eboni K. Williams
  • Sophy Holland

After more than thirteen seasons, attorney, speaker, and journalist Eboni K. Williams became the first Black cast member on The Real Housewives of New York City. You may or may not take the show seriously, but in the entertaining, engaging, and inspiring Bet on Black: The Good News about Being Black in America Today, Williams proves that is exactly how she should be taken. Well aware that many in the public would consider her a diversity hire, regardless of her accolades and accomplishments, she fashioned her RHONY role into an opportunity to showcase Black excellence. In Bet on Black, Williams invites her readers to join her on a quest to show the world what Black excellence really means. She has long known that Blackness is a rich soil that propagates resilience, brilliance, and virtuosity and unabashedly places it on a pedestal. Williams declares that Blackness is her superpower, and shares some of its benefits and advantages which have helped her and many others, even though, for generations, Black folks have been expected to live a subordinate, second-class existence. “No more!” Williams says about that. She boldly proclaims that Blackness is the single most misunderstood construct in America and invites readers to join her on the quest to show the world what Blackness really is. Williams—who these days hosts the popular legal podcast Holding Court—will be joined on stage by fellow podcaster Rae Ingram (QueerVotion) who has questions of her own on how Blackness intersects with the different ways we identify ourselves. We hope that after this session, you will be reawakened to own your worth and understand the value of celebrating Blackness—whether yours or others’.
