Coming Out of Your Shell: A Conversation with Turtle Boy author Evan Wolkenstein

Thursday, May 4 | 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM

Jewish Community High School of the Bay, 1835 Ellis Street, San Francisco

Evan Wolkenstein

Adolescence is a time when young people find themselves suddenly and uncomfortably aware of how others are looking at them. At the same time, this can be an opportunity for teens to discover not just who they are, but also who they aspire to be. Mentors, teachers, and role models can play a critical role in navigating this challenging transition from childhood to extreme awareness of one’s place in the social world. Books also have the capacity to help provide mirrors and windows for readers to test out, experiment with, and explore a range of identities. This event will feature young people reflecting on their journeys of becoming, along with dramatic readings by Evan Wolkenstein, author of Turtle Boy, a middle grade novel about coming out of one’s shell into the light. This is a free event.
