W. Kamau Bell, Kate Schatz

In their Do the Work!: An Antiracist Activity Book comedian W. Kamau Bell and activist Kate Schatz deliver a packed-to-the-gills guide to “dismantling white supremacy in America” that humorously implores you to get involved. Truly thought-provoking, this colorfully illustrated, eye-opening, deeply informative, interactive workbook gives you, the reader, a hands-on understanding of systemic racism. Chock full of engaging games, vibrant comics, and surprisingly deep conversation starters, Bell and Schatz’s innovative (and very funny) volume challenges you to think critically and act effectively. They encourage you to do things like have hard conversations with your folks (and even include scripts and talking points); to be open to new ideas and diversify your social media “feed” with a scavenger hunt; and to test your knowledge of racist laws (many of which are still on the books). In this session Bell and Schatz will engage you around racism, antiracism, white supremacy, and change-making in ways that are fun, unexpected, and hopefully challenging (in a good way). They may go through the included privilege checklist with you so that you can literally check your privilege, or quiz you in the ways that free Blacks were quizzed before being allowed to vote. Do you think you will pass? Bell acknowledges that the conversation they’re trying to build is a minefield, “but luckily, they’re metaphorical mines,” he explains. “So just embrace the fact that you’re going to mess up,” he continues: “you can recover.” This book is about how to come back from messing up. It reads as a casual back and forth between the authors; in this session Bell and Schatz invite you into the conversation to commiserate and conspire on how to best DO THE WORK! Are you ready to get started?
