Fiction: Across Cultures

Saturday, May 6 | 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

The Marsh Berkeley - Theater

  • Literary
  • Race

Jamil Jan Kochai, Marie Myung-Ok Lee, Susanne Pari

Stories transcend borders, build bridges across cultural divides, and foster empathy. In Marie Myung-Ok Lee’s The Evening Hero, a Korean immigrant and recently retired obstetrician struggles against loneliness and isolation across generations and within a Minnesota community whose residents can feel as chilly as its weather. In The Haunting of Hajji Hotak and Other Stories, Jamil Jan Kochai weaves a narrative tapestry of heritage, the ghosts of war, and home that moves between modern-day Afghanistan and the Afghan diaspora. In crafting In the Time of Our History, the acclaimed novelist Susanne Pari drew on her own Iranian American heritage to weave a beautiful story of mothers and daughters, secrets and lies, and defying expectations. Join the authors and moderator Lance Knobel, CEO and co-founder of Cityside, in exploring themes of identity, displacement, and the impact of historical events on individual lives.
