Small, but mighty! This session will feature young protagonists tackling big problems with the spirit and determination of a butterfly flying against the wind. In Cathy Camper’s Lowriders to the Rescue, Lupe, Flapjack, and Elirio must join forces when Sokar, a young monarch, reports that the spread of dangerous wildfire is leaving butterflies stranded. Little Monarchs by Jonathan Case follows Elvie and Flora’s mission to save humanity from extinction by using scales from monarch butterfly wings to create an antidote to sun sickness. Finally, in Shanthi Sekaran’s The Samosa Rebellion, Muki rebels against xenophobia on the fictional island of Mariposa after his grandmother is detained at a relocation camp by the government. Their discussion will shine the spotlight on superhero kids who won’t let their small size stop them from changing the world. And after the session, don’t miss your own chance to be a butterfly hero, by picking up a milkweed plant in our interactive Kids Zone and creating your own butterfly habitat at home! Ages 7–12.
