For many athletes, all those hours spent training and competing makes that sport a big part of their identity. But who are these athletes when they aren’t participating in their sport? Rebecca Balcárcel’s Shine On, Luz Véliz! features soccer star-turned coder Luz Véliz and her journey to find a place for herself after her serious knee injury. In Falling Short, Ernesto Cisneros tells of best friends Isaac and Marco, a basketball player and a chess enthusiast, on their mission to get Marco a spot on the school basketball team. And in Diana Farid’s novel-in-verse Wave, surfer-singer Ava must find a way back to the shore when surfing no longer provides the solace she needs to face life’s challenges. Whether you’re an athlete yourself or just enjoy watching from the sidelines, this session will give you plenty to cheer about! Ages 8–13.
