Gabriela Hasbun, George McCalman, Joshua Teal

We admit it—we’re word people. But books featuring beautiful, provocative imagery can make for a singularly powerful reading experience. Immerse yourself in striking visual artworks and the stories behind them in this hour devoted to the art of the illustrated book. In Illustrated Black History, artist and designer George McCalman collects nearly 150 stunning portraits and biographical sketches of heroes—heralded and unseen alike—in the realms of activism, science, politics, the arts, and more. Gabriela Hasbun pays tribute to the Black cowboys and cowgirls at the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo in Oakland through her stirring photoraphs collected in The New Black West. And ballet dancer Joshua Teal compiles dozens of contemporary visual artists’ interpretations of dance—from photography to sculpture—in the soaring collection Dance Visions. Our host for this session of words and pictures is photographer and Mother Jones photo director Mark Murrmann.
