This one’s an ode to the grifters, the con artists, the scammers: the characters who would gleefully pull one over on you—and probably get away with it, too. In Symphony of Secrets, Brendan Slocumb’s follow-up to his bestselling The Violin Conspiracy, a researcher learns that a famous composer might have built his career by taking credit for the works of a Black Jazz Age prodigy named Josephine Reed. Kirstin Chen, in Counterfeit, sets two enterprising former college roommates on a caper involving knockoff luxury handbags. And in Kyla Zhao’s The Fraud Squad, a talented young writer seizes her chance to enter Singapore’s high society—posing as a socialite in order to land a gig at an elite magazine. Even if the characters they depict are complicated (to put it mildly), there’s one thing we know for sure—these authors are the real deal. Cheryl Popp, owner of Sausalito Books by the Bay, will lead an entertaining conversation about what it takes to write a fake.
