Austin Smith is from Illinois but has spent most of the past decade in northern California, first as a graduate student in poetry at UC Davis, and, more recently, as a Stegner Fellow and Jones Lecturer at Stanford. He’s moved around a bit in his time in the Bay Area, from a rented room in a Victorian near Alamo Square Park in San Francisco to a gloomy cabin in the redwoods near La Honda to a sunny apartment near Lake Merritt in Oakland. His first collection, “Almanac,” was published in 2013, and his second collection, “Flyover Country,” is forthcoming this September.
