Cornelia Funke

Cornelia Funke is a storyteller and illustrator from Germany who lives in Malibu, and in all the worlds she explores with her readers. Following a post-graduate course in book illustration at the Hamburg State College of Design, Cornelia worked as a designer and illustrator of children’s books. But disappointment in the way some of the stories were told, combined with her desire to draw fantastic creatures and magical worlds, inspired her to write her own stories. ‘The Thief Lord’ brought her to readers’ attention around the globe; it immediately entered the New York Times bestseller list. It also appeared on the USA Today bestseller list, and won numerous prestigious awards. Following the success of ‘The Thief Lord’, a string of her novels were introduced to English-speaking readers, with enormous success. ‘Inkheart,’ the first title in her acclaimed trilogy, has been adapted into a major motion picture starring Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany, and Oscar-winner Helen Mirren. Her newest books include ‘The Book No One Ever Read,’ and ‘Lilly and Fin: A Mermaid’s Tale,’ as well as the first three books of the Reckless series. Funke is now at the helm of Breathing Books, her publishing project committed to the love of storytelling.
