John Birdsall

John Birdsall is an independent food writer in Oakland. He is the winner of the James Beard Award for food and culture writing in 2014 (“America, Your Food Is So Gay” in Lucky Peach) and 2016 (“Straight-Up Passing” in Jarry). He was a JBF Award finalist in 2015 for an Eater profile of the chef Jeremiah Tower, and an IACP finalist for a Food & Wine profile of the chef James Syhabout. He’s currently at work on a new biograpy of James Beard, and he recently published a book with Syhabout, “Hawker Fare: Stories & Recipes from a Refugee Chef’s Isan Thai & Lao Roots.”
