Mary Volmer

Mary Volmer is the author of two novels: Crown of Dust (Soho Press) and Reliance, Illinois (Soho Press). Her essays, reviews, and short stories have appeared in various publications, including Mutha Magazine, The Common Politic, Women’s Basketball Magazine, Fiction Writers Review, Historical Novel Society Review, The New Orleans Review, Brevity, and Ploughshares. A former DI college basketball player, she earned a master’s degree at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and an MFA at Saint Mary’s College of California. She has been awarded a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and Hedgebrook, and was a Distinguished Visiting Writer in Residence at Saint Mary’s College where she is now the Mission Fellow for Athletics and the director of the Sport for Humanity Higher Education Initiative. Dan Alter

Dan Alter’s poems, reviews and translations have been published in journals including Field, Fourteen Hills, and Zyzzyva; his first collection My Little Book of Exiles won the 2022 Cowan Poetry Prize. A volume of translations Take a Breath, You’re Getting Excited, from the Hebrew of Yakir Ben-Moshe, was published by Ben Yehuda Press in September 2024, and Hills Full of Holes, a second collection of poems, by Fernwood Press in March 2025. He lives with his wife and daughter in Berkeley. He works at the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life at UC Berkeley.
