10th Anniversary Bay Area Book Festival
June 1-2, 2024, 11 am – 5pm (+ ticketed evening events)
Outdoor Fair/Literary Marketplace (Sunday only)
The Bay Area Book Festival, celebrating its 10th anniversary, welcomes your proposals to participate in the festival’s on-stage programming. Our next festival will take place in two parts: Family Day at the Berkeley Public Library on Saturday May 4, 2024 (geared towards youngsters through teens/YA) and our full festival June 1 & 2, 2024 in Downtown Berkeley. We plan to present the 2024 festival fully in person, with the possibility of some events additionally available via livestream. Barring unforeseen changes in the public health situation, we do not currently plan to host any fully virtual events in 2024
There are two ways to be part of our programming lineup: as an individual speaker, or as a program curator via our brand-new Open Book program. Scroll down to find the nomination guidelines for both.
Deadlines & Guidelines
Proposals for speakers and sessions for the 10th Anniversary Festival are now open through December 1, 2023. Proposals for speakers for the Family Day at the Library are now open through January 10th, 2024. Please carefully review the guidelines and evaluation criteria below, as well as the submission forms. Contact [email protected] with any remaining questions.
About the festival
Annually featuring scores of renowned and emerging authors in conversations at multiple indoor and outdoor venues, the Bay Area Book Festival has become one of the country’s premier literary events. We are lucky to be based in a region rich in literary history and innovation and brimming with writers, readers, activists, and independent booksellers. Attracting 10,000 attendees over the course of the events in Downtown Berkeley, the festival promotes its authors and programs through a robust publicity strategy utilizing social media, partnerships with local press and partner organizations, and story placements in diverse and wide-ranging media outlets.
The Festival offers a panoramic view of what’s most exciting in literature today. Our goal is to create conversation, prioritizing authors and topics that reflect and engage the diverse readers who live and work in the Bay Area. We center marginalized voices, explore complex current events from a multitude of angles, and celebrate boundary-pushing literature. Our comprehensive program for children and middle grade readers finds new and creative ways to engage young readers and their caregivers through interactive and innovative programming.
Nomination Guidelines for Individual Speakers
We encourage the nomination of excellent authors of literary fiction, memoir, works in translation, essays, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, mysteries and thrillers, contemporary romance, graphic novels, current events, politics, science, the humanities, spirituality, travel, poetry, young adult fiction, and children’s books. We especially encourage nominations for BIPOC authors.
We typically do not feature authors of self-help, inspirational, or business titles in our program, nor do we currently have the capacity to support live cooking demos on-site at the festival.
Over the years, we have regularly showcased international authors and the best of contemporary translated literature. Sponsored by a host of international foundations, organizations, and institutions, authors travel to the Festival from a dozen or more countries, and many of the Festival’s domestic authors originally hailed from outside the United States. To appear at the Festival, an author must be able to present in fluent English. The scale and level of any international programming at this year’s festival will depend on sufficient funding for author travel and accommodations.
Book sales are a key part of the Festival experience. Festival speakers should have a book published between June 2023 and June 2, 2024. Books must be readily available for our independent bookseller partners to order via their customary distribution channels, or directly via the publisher.

Nomination Guidelines for Open Book Program
Returning for 2024! We are relaunching our session proposal process as Open Book, an opportunity for Bay Area partner organizations and individual curators to develop and present book festival sessions, leading up to the festival, at venues of your choosing throughout the Bay Area (see more detailed guidelines below).
Unlike individual speaker proposals, Open Book participating speakers are not required to have a recent book publication, though the proposed program must be (broadly) literary in scope. We are not looking for product promotions, plugs for businesses, or sessions featuring a single author publicizing their book. (Please visit our Sponsorship page if you’d like to discuss this type of program.)
Submissions can be made for events that fall outside the festival footprint/timeline, anytime between April 1 to May 31, 2024.
A few guidelines for Open Book off-site events:
- Priority will be given to free programming, although ticketed events will be considered.
- Open Book events cannot be fundraisers for any other organization or individual, and cannot solicit donations before or during the event.
- We will promote approved events as an official part of BABF on social media, on our website, and, as space allows, in other aspects of our festival marketing. In turn, we also call on our partner organizations to market the events through their respective networks.
- In exchange, all approved Open Book events will be required to feature provided BABF logos or marks on all promotional and marketing platforms and to promote both the specific event and the BABF more generally via the presenting organization/curator’s networks.
- Open Book curators are responsible for securing their own venues (including any applicable permits, fees, rentals, etc.) and for providing their own staffing, bookselling, and audiovisual support as needed. All expenses related to travel and supplies are also the sole responsibility of the curator.
- Open Book curators are also responsible for adhering to all state and local guidelines, including those related to COVID-19 and other public health concerns.
- Typical festival programs have included keynote speakers, conversations and interviews, panel discussions, storytelling and interactive experiences, literary performances, and workshops—but we want you to think outside the box! We encourage you to propose innovative programs and formats, from trivia contests to karaoke nights to hands-on workshops in writing, audio storytelling, and more, using venues that range from the traditional (bookstores, libraries, cafes) to the more unorthodox (tattoo parlors, bars, movie theaters). We also are very excited about proposals that take advantage of the many beautiful outdoor opportunities afforded to us in the Bay Area!
- We especially encourage proposals from BIPOC partners and presenters.
Note: A very limited number of session submissions may be selected for programs of up to one-hour in length to be held during the festival June 1 & 2 in Downtown Berkeley) using BABF-secured venues, staffing, bookseller, and audiovisual support. Any sessions selected for inclusion at the festival proper will receive all the same benefits as those participating in BABF-curated festival sessions (e.g., inclusion in speaker lineup and schedule grid, invitations to hospitality events, and access to Green Room). Space available for these programs is very limited, and we expect the selection to be extremely competitive.
Feeling inspired? We love to see it! To submit your Open Book session proposal, please fill out this form (one per session idea, please!)
Proposals were due December 1st, 2023
Evaluation Process and Criteria
All submissions—both for individual authors and for Open Book sessions and programs—will be initially evaluated by the BABF’s programming staff for eligibility. Proposals that meet the eligibility guidelines outlined above will then be evaluated by BABF programming staff and programming advisory committees based on the following criteria:
For individual authors:
- Literary merit
- Broad audience appeal
- Contribution to festival objectives for diversity in representation, genre, and theme
- Financial feasibility, especially with regards to travel and accommodation, if not funded by author or publisher
For Open Book sessions/programs:
- Contribution to festival objectives for diversity in representation, genre, topic, format, and theme
- Potential to draw new audiences and augment existing festival programming in exciting ways
- Feasibility of proposal as described
- Overall creativity
Please note: we do consider all submissions, but we receive many more proposals than we are able to accept. Submissions are due no later than December 1, 2023 (January 10th, 2024 for the family day sessions), and selected authors/curators will be notified no later than the end of January, 2024. We kindly request that you do not contact us to follow up on the status of your submission before February 1, 2024
Other Ways to Get Involved
The proposal evaluation process is very competitive. Even if we can’t include your program in our official festival programming, there are other ways to get involved and guarantee that your author or program can be included in the festival:
Be an Exhibitor
The Festival features scores of literary-themed exhibitors, including individual authors who purchase a booth or table in our outdoor fair held in MLK, Jr. Civic Center Park on June 2nd (please note, these authors do not appear on stages, but interface directly with the public outdoors). If you or your company is interested in exhibiting, please sign up for our newsletter here and be first to know when we are accepting applications. We’d love to have you!
Be a Sponsor
There are many opportunities for sponsorship of the Bay Area Book Festival. Let us work with you to deliver and maximize your investment in this unique event. Opportunities range from branding or creation of sessions, marketing through our mailing list, special outdoor activations, presence at our Author Party, and more. Please visit our sponsor page, email [email protected], or add a request for information to your speaker or program proposal.
